My MagMod

I have used a number of light modifiers in my photography ranging from the Stofen, reflectors, LumniQuest bounce, Lastolite Ezybox and currently the magnet modifiers from MagMod.

What I like about the MagMod is that it is a total system that is very versatile. It allows you control and shape light the way you want in a matter of seconds. Because of the magnetic system you can, for example switch from the MagBounce, MagSnoot, MagGrid or MagSphere in a matter of seconds. With other systems one would have to go through the inconvenience of removing the modifier and replacing it with another modifier and then securing the modifier to the flash units. The advantage of the MagMod system over others is the convenience of just taking off one modifier and switching it for another. Even a kid can do it, it's that simple. With the Magmod it is simple a matter of pulling off one modifier from the MagGrip and throwing another on in its' place. I did in fact thought about not buying the Magmod system as I already owned a number of light modifiers. In fact one of my favourites has been the Lastolite Ezybox. That said, The Lastolite Ezybox is fine for studio shooting but it is quite costly and not portable. The MagMod system on the other hand is very versatile and portable requiring very minimum fuss to set up.

From the day that I decided to take the plunge and bought the MagMod system, I would say I never looked back. Starting with the MagMod Control Kit which comes with a MagSphere, two MagGrids, two MagGrips, MagGel holder, 8 standard MagGels and a MagSnoot, I quickly find myself quite impressed with the ability to control and shape light so much so that I added the MagBounce, MagCreative Gels, an additional MagGrip and MegGel holder. Comparatively it would have cost me a whole lot more to acquire the same number of light modifiers from Lastolite. I am now considering getting the MagBeam kit to complete it all. Just a word of caution, if you are after studio lighting nothing can beat the Lastolite system.

Attached are a few images captured using the MagMod system

The first image is shot with a Mag Snoot on main light and with a MagGel (orange) from under a glass table;

The second with a Mag Snoot and MagGel (yellow) reflected against black background;

The third with a MagSnoot with 1/2 CTO gel and MagGel (blue) reflected on black background and;

The sequence of images captured with the creative MagGels reflected on a black background and two grids on the main light.
