Moh Teng Pheow Koay
Little gem in Penang
When you visit Penang and if you look around carefully you will find that Penang is full of little wonderful gems that will enrich your experience. One of these little gems is Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay hidden at Jalan Masjid (off Chulia Street). Blink an eye and you may just miss it.
What’s so special about this place, you may ask? Nyonya koay/kueh is traditional nyonya cakes and delicacies and Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay serves a wide variety of nyonya koay. Whilst nyonya koay is widely available in Malaysia particularly in Penang, it can be difficult finding the koay so perfectly prepared and covering such a wide range.
The nyonya koay prepared by Moh Teng Pheow, in my opinion, is of the highest quality and attractively presented and served. Believe you me, you will definitely enjoy the quality and taste of the koay and be transported back to the days when nyonyas and babas first introduced the fusion of the Chinese, Malay and even European tastes. You will find it deliciously intriguing and if this your first taste of nyonya cuisines and koay, you will not be disappointed.
At Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay, you do not simply get to enjoy the wonderful koay and nyonya cuisines. As soon as you walk through the door, you will experience the ambience in the kitchen with all the nyonya’s utensils and workers busy preparing the koay. The experience itself is intriguing even for someone like myself who is originally from Penang. In addition, as you enter the eatery itself, you will experience the wonderful rustic ambience of the nyonya decorations and antiques. The koay in the glass display will start your mouth salivating.
The owners Mook Hian Beng and Jolyn Mook are very friendly people and look after their patrons very well.
If I have anything to suggest it would be:
To open up the eatery for small parties and bookings and
To conduct a cooking course in nyonya koay and cuisines and thereby keep the culture and tradition alive for the future generations.
